The
batik technique was developed in Indonesia, but also in Thailand some villages
are well known for this handicraft. The village of Bang Kaya, only 8 km from
Khao Lak, is one of them. Here you may learn to make batik to your own design
and, of course, you may take it home.
How to make batik.
Equipment needed:
"Canting". This is a small little pot with a very fine nozzle
and handle. |
A piece of white cloth. (can be rayon, crepe, silk or cotton) |
Wooden frame |
Some wax |
Batik Dye |
A small fine brush |
How to do:
Choose a theme you wish to design and draw your selected
or desired design on a piece of white cloth. |
Stretch the white cloth over a wooden frame so that you can apply the
wax easily. |
Pour the hot melted wax into a "canting". The melted wax pouring out
through the thin nozzle is used to outline the design drawn earlier. |
Use a small fine brush to color the design with batik dye. (this dye
comes in a magnitude of variety of colors and shades. Batik dye is usually
bright and striking) |
When the whole design has been outlined, put the cloth to dry outside. |
After it is completely dried., remove the cloth from the frame. Allow
it to soak in a solution of sillicate (this will help the color to set in) |
Wash the cloth to remove the sillicate. |
Soak the cloth into boiling water to remove the wax. |
Dry out the cloth and iron it out. |
